A Note on the CBR Memorial Tournament:

Chris Beach-Rehner or “CBR”, was a teammate to many of us when we played for the Portland Stags, of the now defunct MLU. He was a hilarious, spirited, and engaged member of the Portland Ultimate community. He was someone we were proud to call a friend and teammate.  Sadly, Chris took his own life in the winter of 2015.

CBR was a competitor who was always striving to get better. He took the work of the sport seriously while never hesitating to laugh at himself. He was a goofball who would show up before games in a fur coat and rainbow tights. The outrageousness of his clothing choices was made more extreme by his towering frame.

Off the field, Chris worked for Janus Youth Programs where he worked closely with children who were homeless, running away, or otherwise in crisis. He developed strong relationships with the people he worked with and was tremendously respected at the organization. The executive director of Janus addressed the crowd at the first Stags game after Chris passed away. He explained how important Chris was to those around him and what an enormous loss he presented to the young people he worked with. His words were no surprise to Chris’ teammates.

Those of us on the team that had the pleasure of knowing Chris think back fondly to his humor, his energy, and his dedication to lifting up the people around him. We are excited to take part in the tournament that carries his name this season.
